MINNEAPOLIS, USA. January 22, 2020 – A full-image/full-text digital archive of The Japan News, an English-language daily published by The Yomiuri Shimbun in Japan, is now available from East View.
Launched in 1955, The Japan News is a proverbial roadmap documenting the rapid change that transformed postwar Japan—once the juggernaut of the Pacific—for Asian studies students and scholars who may not be able to read Japanese.
The Japan News capitalizes on the unparalleled editorial prowess of renowned publication The Yomiuri Shimbun (読売新聞), a leading Japanese newspaper with one of the largest circulations in the world, to deliver international and Japanese news content from a Japanese perspective, all in English. This coming April will mark the 65th anniversary since The Yomiuri Shimbun started publishing an English-language newspaper.
The Japan News Digital Archive (1955-2019) features 300,000 pages of full page-level digitization with original graphics and text (including advertisements) that is 100% browsable and searchable on the East View Global Press Archive® platform. It includes every issue of the paper published under a variety of masthead names.
“The Japan News Digital Archive has finally made it possible to find any story from all the pages printed over the last 65 years,” said Fumihiro Kitayama, Managing Editor of The Japan News. “I believe this newly-launched archive from East View will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and students of the Japanese and Asian Studies and their understanding of the Japanese society and culture.”
